How to Love Cleaning (When You Don’t)

Cleaning can be quite a challenge when you don’t enjoy it.

I use to be the biggest slob. But my home went from clean to chaos with the help of these practical tips.

  1. Have a system - Having a system helps to reduce overwhelm. It also helps us to look forward to cleaning because we will know exactly what to do as well as when to do it. It also helps us to see progress quickly in our homes. I follow the flylady system and it works wonderfully for me and my home. However, the best system is the one that works for you and your family.

  2. Whistle while you work - I listen to fun upbeat music, podcasts , and interesting audiobook. Add these to your list next time you need to get some cleaning done. Maybe you can even listen to my YouTube channel in the background. Having something to do while cleaning can take our minds off of the cleaning and before you know it so much will be done. If you make it fun, it will surely get done.

  3. Hardest thing first- Hit the ground running by doing the hardest task first. This really helps me because that way the rest of the day will be smooth sailing. A weight is lifted off and the rest of the tasks will seem super easy.

  4. Keep a list - Keeping a to-do list helps get all of my task out of my mind and into paper. That way I don’t forget the things I need to do. Not to mention, it is so fun checking off the to-dos. The more tasks I checked off the more I wanted to do.

  5. Treat yourself - When I finish a room or a difficult task, I treat myself by doing something I wanted to do as a reward. I might go for a quick walk with the boys or allow myself to scroll for a bit on social media while they nap. But I only treat myself after the task is done, not before. This incentivizes me to get the task done quickly.

  6. Set Boundaries - I have a rule for myself that I never, ever clean on weekends. Besides my morning and evening routines (to keep my home running smoothly), I do not clean. This helped me to love cleaning and not dread it because I get to take a break.. Since I see homemaking as a job, then i should get some days off as well! That way I do not get burnt out.

These are some things that helped me to love cleaning, even thought I use to dread it. Hopefully, these practical and proven tips help you to love cleaning as well!
